DOES YOUR BEDROOM NEED ART?

Does Your Bedroom Need Art

When it comes to the interiors of your home, it can be easy to get swept up in the notion that every nook and cranny needs to be adorned with canvases or prints. However let’s pause for a moment and consider the essence of a bedroom. It’s a sanctuary, a haven of rest and rejuvenation. In this restorative space, simplicity can often be more conducive to tranquility than a cluttered cacophony of artwork clamouring for attention.

The absence of artwork can create a sense of openness and airiness within a bedroom, fostering a feeling of freedom and relaxation. A minimalist approach allows the mind to unwind and declutter, promoting a deeper sense of peace and contentment.

And let’s not forget, art can be expensive, it’s very personal and it sets the tone for a space immediately.  Consider the freedom that comes with a blank canvas. Without the constraints of predetermined artwork dictating the room’s aesthetic, you’re free to experiment with different design elements and accents. Whether it’s a vibrant throw pillow, a luxuriously textured throw blanket, or a striking piece of furniture, the absence of artwork opens up a world of possibilities for personal expression and creativity.

While I know many people might be concerned that a room will feel bare or cold without pictures on the wall, with the right finishes in the room, it will still feel cosy and inviting.

Looking at these gorgeous bedroom spaces, notice the boucle style fabric on the headboards, that brings all the texture and cosiness to the room. The colours in the spaces are very tonal, which creates a cocoon like feeling the rooms, making it inviting. When you design a room without artwork, you’ll need to pay close attention to the colours your use and the fabrics and materials you bring into the space. You want to make the setting as tactile as possible, which is where you bring the warmth. You can also consider bringing pattern and interest in through the rugs and bedding.

The panelling in this bedroom is fresh and welcoming. We love how they have let it shine and not covered in artwork. Taking a minimalist approach is a great way to let architectural details in a bedroom setting shine.

In my own bedroom I’ve also gone the route of not having artwork on the walls. With the room being purposefully designed to be dark, the goal is to let you feel enveloped by the wall colour, which creates a calming effect – perfect for my insomniac of a housemate. Instead I brought in detail through the feature wall light, and the wall mirror, which was a purposeful addition to break up the big wall. In this instance, I guess you could say it’s my artwork. Do you need it – probably not, but I really liked the round shape in the very square bedroom setting.
