These days I feel there is nothing more decadent in life than some quality ME time. And while that might not look the same to everyone, for this small-business-owner-working-mother-of-two-small-kids, adding a few extra downtime hours to your day goes a long way. And even though I spent the last two weeks holidaying with said kids (which of course leaves no quality me time) I thought – heck yeah, why not embrace these holidays vibes floating around and just do it. Go a little crazy. Take time for yourself!
So I did. I just logged off social media. For two weeks. And while that isn’t necessarily a solid long term business plan, it was CRAZY how relaxing it was, let alone how many extra hours in my day it gave me. It really felt like I took a much needed holiday break. A mental holiday break. And while I have missed sharing blog posts with project updates and “design agony” solutions with you all (like A LOT), the time out did my brain – and sleep numbers – some good.
Two weeks lying beach and pool side, getting salty cracks for hair and sun scorched skin, made me realise that summer is hot on our heels. And in South Africa, we are quickly entering the phase where year end furniture orders are closing and stock runs low, so now is the time to get your alfresco space in top shape for the sunny season.
We’re dedicating October on the blog to getting summer ready, and while custom braai’s and swimming pools are often top of the Saffa summer wishlist, there are so many ways you can bring your outdoor spaces to life.
These three easy outdoor additions will have you swinging into summer!
Outdoor Lighting
If you have the opportunity during a build or renovation to bring low lighting into your backyard space, then we can’t recommend it enough. However, even if you don’t have electrics and wiring in place, there are so many ways to bring ambient lighting to your backyard. Fairy lights are everyone’s favourite friend, and these versatile lights can be hung and strung in so many ways to add some twinkle to your setting. Just make sure you purchase the all-weather outdoor option, to avoid any issues.
For even more off-the-grid versatility, we love solar power ground spikes and floor lamps. Positioned carefully, lights create highlights and turn trees and shrubs into sculptural focal points while the shadows around them contribute a sense of mystery.
And let’s not forget candles for ambient table settings for those alfresco dinner parties.

Hammocks and Swing Chairs
Nothing says lazy summer days like rocking the hours away in a hammock or swing chair. These chairs have gained popularity over the last couple of years in teen pads and kids rooms, but we love them outside. Bring in a pair to create a playful feature spot, or use just one for the ultimate relaxation zone. Even if you don’t have a place to hang them, there are many options with feet and stands, making them a lot more versatile in your setting.

Fire Pits
Imagine cool summer nights, the stars are out, spending time with your friends, good wine – all while sitting alongside a fire pit. Fire pits have gained huge popularity and are one of the most requested elements we receive for outdoor build and renovation projects.
Adding a fire pit to your current backyard space is as easy as making your way down to Builders Warehouse and picking one up. All you need to do then is find the perfect spot and add in some comfy chairs. Even if you don’t have a lot of space, you can get really compact options won’t crowd your backyard and can be packed away when not in use.
If you’re looking to create a dedicate space all year round, then we suggest opting for a sculptural piece that makes a statement on its own. Adding some ground cover, in the form of loose stones or even a dedicated paving area is a good idea to protect your lawn in the long term.
