A boy’s bedroom that shows that small spaces can have big personalities!
This tween boy’s bedroom went from extremely dull and very dated, to fun, colourful and age appropriate. What really struck a chord with me about the bedroom makeover is the simple and budget friendly approach to the makeover – especially the wardrobe solution.
The bedroom was previously an office space in the house. A small dark room that only fitted a bed and a small chest of drawers. There was no colour, no personality and the small room was overwhelmed but the large furniture pieces. Not an ideal space for a growing boy.
The theme for the bedroom was inspired by his interest in comic superheroes and his favourites (blues and reds). To temper the bold colours, muted shades were used in a variety of patterns, which also helped keep the feeling in the space youthful.
The floors were changed from carpet to vinyl, which makes the space feel bigger. It is also to play with Lego on a vinyl floor than on carpet. Striped wallpaper was installed on the ceiling, making the room feel wider than it really is. A graphic, multi-pile rug brings in some texture.
However instead of bring in expensive built-in wardrobes, an open style, wall-mounted, storage system was used as the basis for the bedroom storage. It was then enclosed in an MDF frame, which was painted a showstopping red, and closed off with a black and white curtain. This is a really storage option for kids bedrooms, especially if you are DIY inclined.
The small nook was turned into a homework station, and the addition of the leftover wallpaper ties the bedroom theme together. Something we don’t see often, is the colourful and striking colour of the skirting.
A metal trundle bed rounds off the contemporary style of the bedroom, but is also a great small bedroom design solution., offering the option of either another pull out mattress for sleepovers. or extra storage below.
