Our kids have been on school holidays for almost two weeks now, while I know many of you are only wrapping up the term this Friday. We started our break with a few days in the bush at a beautiful private game reserve, followed by a week in Plett. We couldn’t have asked for more—gorgeous weather, a stunning spot to stay, amazing friends – and most importantly, much-needed time to reset.
These days, I’ve come to believe there’s nothing more indulgent than carving out true me-time. And while that might not look the same to everyone, for this small-business-owner-working-mother-of-two-young-kids – simply carving out a few extra hours to myself in a day feels like such a luxury. And what a difference it makes.
Stepping back always refuels my creativity energy, and during these periods I find myself leaning into small rituals of reflection. During those periods I enjoy doing what always helps me bring intention to a new season – writing down the experiences I want to have and the energy I want to bring to my summer. Less about ticking off tasks, more about shaping how I want life to feel.
At the heart of it, I want to spend less time looking at what everyone else is doing, and more time being present in my own life. I think most of us can admit we’re guilty of that — reaching for the phone to capture a moment instead of just being in it, or scrolling through other people’s lives while missing what’s happening right in front of us. This summer I want to keep my eyes on my own life, awake to the moments as they unfold.
And while I may be a little quieter here, it’s because I’m focussing on just that. Summer is my favourite time of the year, and I don’t want these next few months to disappear in a blur of errands and emails. I want to make them count.
Don’t let this emotional weather fool you – summer is hot on our heels. In the South African design world we are quickly entering the phase where year end furniture orders are closing and stock runs low, so now is the time to get your alfresco space in top shape for the sunny season.
We’re dedicating our time this October to getting summer ready. While custom braai’s and swimming pools are often top a South African’s home renovation wish list, there are so many ways you can bring your outdoor spaces to life. A few thoughtful additions an make all the difference in shaping those long, sun-soaked days to come.
Daybed, Hammocks and Swing Chairs
Nothing captures the spirit of a long summer’s day quite like swaying gently in a hammock or curling up in a swing chair — the kind of seat that invites you to lose track of time. Daybeds, loungers, and outdoor ‘lazy’ chairs have become favourites in teen pads and kids’ rooms in recent years, but we love them even more when they find their place outside.
A pair of swing chairs instantly creates a playful feature for family and friends, while a single piece can transform a corner into the ultimate relaxation zone. And if you don’t have the perfect spot to hang one, don’t worry — there are plenty of free-standing options with their own frames, making them versatile enough to work in almost any outdoor setting.

Fire Pits
Picture it: a cool summer evening, the stars overhead, friends gathered close, a glass of wine in hand — all centred around the glow of a fire pit. It’s no wonder fire pits have become one of the most requested features in our outdoor projects. They create atmosphere, anchor a gathering, and extend the use of your garden well into the night.
The beauty is that adding one doesn’t need to be complicated. A quick trip to Builders will give you plenty of ready-to-go options — just set it up in the right spot and add a circle of comfortable chairs. If your garden is on the smaller side, there are compact versions that won’t overwhelm your space and can be packed away when not in use.
For those wanting something more permanent, consider investing in a sculptural piece that becomes a design feature in its own right. Pair it with a simple ground cover — loose stone or a paved surround — to protect your lawn and create a dedicated outdoor zone you’ll enjoy year after year.

Outdoor Lighting
If you have the opportunity during a build or renovation to bring low lighting into your backyard space, then we can’t recommend it enough. However, even if you don’t have electrics and wiring in place, there are so many ways to bring ambient lighting to your backyard. Fairy lights are everyone’s favourite friend, and these versatile lights can be hung and strung in so many ways to add some twinkle to your setting. Just make sure you purchase the all-weather outdoor option, to avoid any issues.
For even more off-the-grid versatility, we love rechargeable outdoor table lamps. Moodmakers is one our favourite suppliers for gorgeous affordable outdoor lamps. They are ideal for ambient table settings for those alfresco dinner parties, and when thoughtfully positioned, they can create highlights and turn trees and shrubs into sculptural focal points while the shadows around them contribute a sense of mystery.
Last but not least, don’t underestimate candles as the ultimate outdoor mood setters.
