Having spent far too many years living in tiny city apartments, with just as small balcony, rooftops or ledges, I soon learnt that you don’t need lots of outdoor space. You just need to make the most of what you have.
No matter how small your outdoor area may be, there are always way to make the most of the available space you do have. If you’re having trouble with where to get started, we got three helpful pointers on the blog today.
Choose Your Style
Are you trying to emulate that Mediterranean feeling? Then stick white colours and natural textures, which would immediately bring warm and sunny days to mind. Prefer something minimalist and sleek? Focus on furniture pieces with simple lines and possibly stick to a black and white colour palette. Perhaps you’re after an earthy feeling? Try a mix of deep warm tones and furniture pieces with contemporary curved shapes.
Whatever your style, make sure you have this defined in advance so that you stick with it when considering pieces for your balcony. To make a smaller space feel larger, the design should feel cohesive and seamless. If you have a mix of styles in a space space, it will feel rather chaotic and crowded.

Add Greenery – And Some Privacy
Nothing says you’re outside more than being surrounded by nature. Even if it is a handful of potted plants on your balcony. These potted plants will go a long way to making your balcony feel more like a garden.
Low maintenance potted grasses and perennials help cocoon your space for added the benefit of additional privacy. This is especially great if you’re in a rental and don’t want to make any permanent changes to your outside space.
Just remember that on a balcony plants will dry out fast, especially if they get several hours of full sun. So either choose plants that can withstand a little neglect or work well in dry conditions. Think Mediterranren plants like olive trees and citrus tree, or desert plants like succulents and cacti.
Finish With A Rug
No matter the size of your outdoor space, a rug will always pull the look together.
If your balcony or deck doesn’t have any rain protection, just make sure you’ve select an fully outdoor option that you don’t need to keep moving to suit the weather.
