THE RISE OF THE PYJAMA LOUNGE

The Rise Of The Pajama Lounge

At this point in the lock down situation our whole house could probably qualify as a pyjama lounge. You know, a  comfortable place where you can hang out in out PJs all day without seeing any visitors….. so what exactly is considered a pyjama lounge (under normal circumstances) you might ask?!

While the name attached to the concept might be new, the ideas behind the these spaces aren’t new concepts, nor are homes being redesigned to incorporate them. Typically the pyjama lounge concept applies to double story homes where the bedrooms are on a separate level to the living spaces and there is an additional living area next to the bedrooms. A place where you can hang out in your PJ’s all  daybefore heading downstairs, all dressed and ready to take on the world.

For anyone that grew up in surburbia this is probably equates to a playroom you may have had upstairs, or the old casual TV room for the kids or over the more formal living area where you all gather with visitors. On single level homes, you might find this extra room near the bedrooms if they are separated from the living areas.

So why is the pyjama lounge becoming so popular?  The purpose of the pyjama lounge has evolved to become a more intimate space where you can hang out together as a family, away from the ‘busier’ functional spaces in a home. It’s like your safe Sunday cocoon space where you’ll see no house guests and there is no need to be dressed and presentable.

Instead of being an afterthought of dead space, pyjama lounges are getting major makeovers. They are intimate and cosy spaces designed to encourage lounging around, quality time with family and generally slowing down in life.

So what do you need to create your own fully fledged pyjama lounge? You’ll definitely need large oversized sofas, and ideally the sofas will extend wall to wall like in the above space. Built in sofa units are also ideally suited to the pyjama lounge to maximise the available space in these typically smaller living spaces.

A soft, plush rug underfoot is a must, as are lots of cosy cushions and wonderful blankets and throws – especially for the winter months.

If your home need extra storage, this is a great place to incorporate smart floor to ceiling joinery. A television is essential, as lots of TV watching happens in the pyjama lounge, and it is also a great spot to house all other technology from Ninentdo and Wii games, to routers and media boxes. Charging stations and plenty of power outlets are also must for this space.

Coffee and side tables are also essential furniture, mostly to hold the abundance of coffee and hot chocolate mugs, bowls of popcorn and other necessary TV watching accessories.

Then it’s just a matter of wearing your cosiest and most comfortable PJ’s, putting your feet up and settling in for some relaxing downtime.
