If you’ve found yourself paying closer attention to the small choices lately—what you wear, what you reach for, what you keep and let go of—we feel you. Autumn is in full flow, and as daylight dips earlier each day, the change in season naturally draws us inward. It’s the time of year when we start nesting a little more—refreshing our interiors and bringing in that comforting sense of warmth for the months ahead.
Creating that inviting, cosy interior isn’t always easy – especially when you’re not looking to make major changes. These are a few simple ways to reset your space, focusing on small, thoughtful updates that create that winter-ready feel.
DECLUTTER AND PACK AWAY
As we tend to spend more time at home in winter, our spaces can start to feel crowded quite quickly. Our first piece of advice is always to pack away as much visual noise as possible. Objects that catch your eye for the wrong reasons
Clear surfaces instantly make a home feel more spacious and more inviting. There’s a sense of clarity that comes with it, and often, a lighter space gently lifts your mood too.
And while you’re at it – move a few things around.
Before buying anything new, shop your own home. Shift décor, swap accent tables, move a pillow or a piece of artwork to a different room. A familiar piece, seen from a new perspective, can completely change the energy of a space.
RETHINK YOUR LIGHTING
Switching your lighting is often the last thing you may think of, but they instantly work to create a cozy ambience in both living rooms and bedrooms. The right lighting creates a cosy, inviting atmosphere. Warm-toned lamps placed at lower heights help create more intimate, mood-driven zones within a space.
Consider adding a floor lamp to a quiet corner for soft ambient light. We also love smaller, rechargeable LED lamps styled on bookshelves or coffee tables—they’re an easy way to introduce that gentle, layered glow.

LAYER IN RUGS
When it comes to winter, more really is more. Layering in rugs over tiles, hardwood floor and even if your bedroom is already carpeted, grounds your space while softening acoustics and bringing a warm, lived-in feel to a room.
And to keep everything looking its best through the wetter months, we always recommend leaving shoes at the front door—European style. Your rugs (and floors) will thank you, and you’ll get to enjoy that cosy underfoot feeling in socks.

DRESS YOUR BEDROOM IN MOODY LINENS
Have you considered swapping out white bedding for something a little moodier during winter? Deeper tones can instantly shift the feel of a bedroom, adding a sense of warmth and softness.
Swapping cotton sheets for linen is another simple update. The texture linen sheets give off compared with cotton creates brings visual interest, creating that relaxed, layered look. Linen is also one of those rare materials that works year-round – keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. A favourite option has always been the eco conscious linen collection from H&M Home.

LAYER IN THROWS
A cosy winter throw is often the finishing touch a room needs.
I recently added the polar throw from Hertex to my eldest daughter’s bed, and she immediately noticed the difference – she is not only besotted with the texture of the throw, but she also commented on how much warmer it makes her room feel. Proof that even 10 year olds can see the value in adding texture to your setting.
Choose Your Signature Scent
This is the time of the year to get your candles burning and to really lean into a signature scent. Lighting a candle can completely shift the mood of your home.
There are an abundance of autumn scented candles available to us. We like to focus on earthy sandalwood, warm vanilla or a spicy cinnamon. The right fragrance ties everything together and makes your space feel warm and welcoming.

BRING IN FRESH FLOWERS OR GREENERY
A small gesture with a big impact, even in the cooler months. In winter, we tend to favour simple greenery—natural branches, soft leafy stems, arrangements that feel a little undone.
Place these next to your bed, on your desk, or in the living area — somewhere you pass often. They add life, softness, and a quiet sense of care to everyday moments.
And remember – a new look doesn’t require big purchases. Swapping out scatter cushions, changing a lampshade, adding a sculptural lamp, or restyling a shelf can completely shift the mood of a room.
Getting winter-ready is rarely about adding more. It’s about editing, refining, and making space for what truly matters.
