The Scallop Trend

The Home Studio Scallop Trend

Are you over it or still living it?

If you believe everything the internet tells you, the scallop trend is out – and honestly I can understand why. It’s one of those design element that can easily be overused, quickly losing its charm and impact. There is also nothing wrong with the scalloped edge explosion at all, if it truly makes you happy to see those little whimsical waves in your home. Design trends should be fun for people who geek out about design. I just don’t think every item or element in a room needs to be quite this fanciful. A quirky detail always feels more special when used with restraint.

Supposedly  the scallop has been replaced by ruffles, bobbin trim and waves, but I think it rises above all those smaller finishing details. Softer than a geometric pattern yet more elegant than a wave, scalloped detailing has been loved in interiors for decades. And really, it makes perfect sense — everyone is drawn to arches and curves right now, and what is a scallop if not an upside-down arch, or half circle?

FURNITURE THAT UNDULATES

The scallop lends itself beautifully to furniture and finishes, often elevating something simple into something quietly beautiful. And remember, scalloping doesn’t need to be over the top—just a few dips will do.

Consider the scalloped headboard, one of my personal favourites. With all its inherent softness, the scallop feels undeniably romantic, making it perfectly suited to the bedroom. Walk into a room with a scalloped headboard and, no matter what else surrounds it — a vintage mirrored wardrobe, a charming dressing table — your eye is instinctively drawn there first.

I created this custom headboard for my eldest daughters bedroom, and it has truly brought a magical element to her space.

Mirrors too are an opportunity to weave the scallop’s easy arcs into your schemes. Place one in a room where whimsy exists already and it will slot right into place, but I quite like the notion of introducing its waved edge to a smarter scheme to encourage it to let loose, just a little.

Mirrors, too, are an opportunity to weave the scallop’s gentle arcs into a space. Place one in a room already layered with whimsy and it slips right in, but I also love the idea of introducing a scalloped edge into a more tailored scheme, simply to soften it ever so slightly.

See the light with scalloped lampshades. The curved edging feels like such a welcome departure from the standard shapes we’re all used to

We recently brought a scalloped edge into this bathroom vanity, adding a much-needed sense of softness to an otherwise linear space.
