Modern Living Room Design | 3 Budgets

A chic modern and minimal living space can often come with a hefty price. Big name Italian brands abound, while sleek finishes and smart function are common place. We thought we’d offer you our design skills and show you how to do it right – even on a budget!  We sourced the furniture from our everyday, well-known local furniture retailers such as MRP Home, @Home, Coricraft, Superbalist and Woolworths, so that you can too.

We were inspired by these images below.  The spaces have muted palette of greys and white, sleek and simple furniture pieces and a distinct ‘less is more’ element to the spaces.

First up is our most expensive room, which came in at R44,163 (which crazily is less than the price of sofa at a high end design store!).  Priced at R8,999 this sofa is a great deal. The proportions are fantastic – a fabulous wide and deep 2-seater sofa , where very little space is wasted on the frame and it has a chic, modern look.  In this instance the armchair could be considered a splurge item, but it really ups the ante of the space. I’m also loving the wall hanging, which are so popular at the moment.

The mid-range room is less than R25,000 – quite a big drop from the most expensive room, which just goes to show how costs can quickly add up. Savings were made across the board on key items like the sofa, armchair, rug, coffee table, console and artwork. The pieces in the room are much lighter, giving it a much more feminine look, but still very contemporary.

Our final room cam in just under R16,000 and I am still very into it. That console is an incredible piece of furniture for the price and really pulls the whole room together. I am also still wowed about the affordability of the prints on superbalist. If you are looking to add art to your home that is affordable, but not too depressingly tacky, the Superbalist selection is a great place to start.

Not bad at all! For those of you into this look you should feel proud you can have this room with an affordable budget. It’s chic and modern without the pretentious price tags, and yet still interesting and pulled together. If you’ve tried any of these pieces we’d love to hear your thoughts!
