An original “stoep” (as we affectionately refer to them in South Africa) or, if you prefer, front patio, porch or verandah, conjures up nostalgic feelings of old world charm and character. Perhaps it’s because they provide us with a link to an idealised past, before our walls were built up high for security and when neighbours actually used to chat to each other from across their stoeps, and passersby were greeted by residents relaxing after a long day at work.
A stoep gave a home personality from the moment one entered the front gate. They also have the practical function of providing shade and were originally protected the home from flooding. Original examples usually spanned the entire width of the home and were raised on a platform or terrace.
Even today there are many heritage homes in South Africa that still feature their original porches. Although they don’t function in quite the same way as they used to, one can still make emphasise this beautiful feature by restoring them to their former glory, creating a welcoming entrance and extra curb appeal for your home. These three are our favourite stoep styles for patio inspiration.
Traditional
This is our all time favourite style, often with the inclusion of intricate broekie lace (Victorian style ornamental wrought iron work), shutters and fronted by a well planned garden.
It’s easy to update a traditional style stoep using wooden benches or hanging chairs, combined with large modern concrete planters. Modern and sleek post boxes and house numbers also pair well and contrast the more traditional features.
Coastal
There is possibly nothing better than sitting on your front patio, watching the ocean (or people) and taking in the salty sea air. With the inclusion of rattan or cane furniture, swing benches, coastal lanterns and palms, this will become a spot you will never want to leave.
Modern
Just because front porches originated many many years ago, there is nothing to say they shouldn’t be included in modern, newly built homes. We love a modern setting that pairs wood and concrete, ceiling fans for those extra areas and contemporary light fixtures. Darker finishes and black accents also add welcome drama to the modern setting.
